Generative drone synthesis · Beta 1.0.5

Syndrone

A deep generative drone synthesizer for evolving ambient, cinematic and experimental sound. Syndrone combines autonomous voices, MIDI performance, 16 synthesis structures, long-form evolution, spatial motion and a four-slot modulation matrix in one instrument designed to keep changing long after a conventional patch would have settled.

Public betaSyndrone is now in release-candidate testing. Please expect occasional host, CPU, preset or state-recall edge cases while the installer builds are validated.
macOS beta warningThe beta installer is not notarised yet. Gatekeeper may require you to right-click the installer or app and choose Open on first launch.
Windows beta warningUnsigned Windows beta installers may trigger Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. Only continue if you downloaded the file from Slowfield Audio and trust it.

16 synthesis structuresFrom Dual Drift and Subharmonic to Additive Resonator, Formant Choir, Phase Glass, Cluster Unison, Bowed Resonance and Spectral Organ.
Long-form evolutionScene morphing, harmonic migration, rare events and 1–32 minute evolution curves let a drone develop gradually instead of looping obviously.
Deep modulationFour flexible routing slots with slow LFOs, Brownian motion, chaos, Euclidean and probability pulses, host-phase sources and a broad destination list.
Spatial engineWidth, depth, height, orbit, distance and automatic movement create a living stereo field that can evolve with the sound.
Mass + SupermassiveIncrease perceived scale, bank density, octave reinforcement and spatial body without simply turning the output louder.
Instrument concept

Build a drone, then let the instrument keep composing its interior.

Choose a tonal framework, synthesis Structure and Character, then let Evolution, Spatial and Modulation continuously reshape the result. Syndrone can work as a self-generating instrument, a MIDI-playable synthesizer, or a hybrid of both.

Structure + Character

Structure chooses the fundamental synthesis behaviour. Character then reshapes harmonic weighting, movement, spread, tension and tonal personality, so the same engine can move from warm and organic to mechanical, fragile, radiant, monolithic or alien.

Designed for duration

Generate fixed 16, 32 or 64-bar forms, or switch to Perpetual for effectively endless evolution. Key, scale and octave constraints keep autonomous voices musically coherent.

A simple starting path

  1. Choose Key, Scale and octave range. Give the generator a harmonic world.
  2. Select Structure and Character. Establish the synthesis identity.
  3. Set Evolution Time. Try 8 or 16 minutes for unhurried movement.
  4. Shape Space and Mass. Establish width, depth, orbit and scale.
  5. Add one modulation route. Slow or random movement into Tone, Harmonic, Orbit or Age is often enough.
  6. Listen longer than a loop. Syndrone is designed to reveal itself over time.
Sound palette

Sixteen different ways to generate the core material.

The Structure selector changes the way voices, harmonics and movement are assembled rather than simply choosing a waveform.
Additive ResonatorWeighted harmonic and inharmonic partials for resonant, bell-like and metallic material.
Formant ChoirMoving formant weighting for vocal, choral and vowel-like spectral movement.
Phase GlassBright phase-modulated spectra for crystalline and glass-like drones.
Cluster UnisonDense micro-detuned banks for huge, unstable atmospheric beds.
Bowed ResonanceNonlinear resonant behaviour suggesting bowed strings and resonant bodies.
Spectral OrganStructured harmonic stacks for organ-like sustained textures.
16 CharactersIncludes Warm, Mechanical, Hollow, Dense, Fragile, Monolithic, Radiant and Alien alongside the original set.
52 presetsContrasting showcase and Starter patches spanning keys, scales, registers, structures and evolution behaviour.
Evolution + scenes

Movement measured in minutes, not milliseconds.

Capture four scenes, generate related states, morph between them, introduce rare events and let harmonic relationships, timbre, space and effects migrate over 1–32 minute periods.

Scenes A–D

Capture four musical states, then use Scene Path and Scene Morph to travel between them gradually.

Evolution shapes

Rise/Fall, Breathing, Wander, Tide, Bloom, Collapse and Generative determine how change develops over time.

Tip — evolve without becoming busy

  1. Start with two scenes. Make A dark and narrow, B brighter and wider.
  2. Use 8–16 minutes. Let the transition breathe.
  3. Keep Evolution Amount moderate. Avoid changing every dimension at once.
  4. Enable Evolution Link. Let the spatial field move with the composition.
  5. Use Rare Events sparingly. A little unpredictability feels intentional.
Deep modulation

Four slots, but a much larger vocabulary.

Slow LFO A–F, Hyper LFO, Envelope, Random Walk, Sample & Hold, Sample & Glide, Chaos, Bipolar Random, Smooth Random, Brownian Walk, Evolution, Scene Morph, Step Lane, Host Tempo Phase, Euclidean Pulse and Probability Pulse can reach synthesis, spatial, FX, degradation and mixer destinations.

Subtle

Brownian Walk → Tone, Slow LFO → Orbit or Smooth Random → Width can keep a patch alive without revealing an obvious cycle.

Rhythmic

Host Tempo Phase, Euclidean Pulse and Probability Pulse can add structure without turning the drone into a conventional sequence.

Macro

Targets such as Mass, Age, Grain Size, Shimmer Feedback, filters and layer levels let a single source reshape entire regions of the sound.

Three quick recipes

From first drone to deep generative system.

Beginner — Warm Bed

Dorian scale, Warm Character, Dual Drift, 4–8 voices, 8-minute Wander, moderate Width and low Shimmer.

Intermediate — Glass Cathedral

Lydian scale, Phase Glass, Radiant Character, Scene A/B morph, Shimmer + Grain Cloud and Brownian Walk → Orbit.

Advanced — Alien Monolith

Phrygian or Locrian, Cluster Unison, Alien Character, Mass + Supermassive, 16-minute Generative evolution, Probability Pulse → Top Filter and Brownian Walk → Age.

Hot tips

  1. Age / Patina is an excellent slow destination when you want the sound to appear to weather over time.
  2. Mass builds scale; Supermassive pushes density and body further without being a simple gain boost.
  3. Scene Morph + Evolution Link can turn one static preset into an entire evolving piece.
  4. Use the mixer last. Base, Middle, Top and Air can focus an enormous patch without redesigning it.
  5. Randomise gently first. Gentle and Medium are often better creative tools than Wild when you already like the patch.

Why this beta exists

Syndrone is intentionally deep. Long-running sessions expose CPU behaviour, state-recall issues, modulation edge cases and whether a patch stays musically interesting after ten or twenty minutes.

Feedback that helps

Please include your DAW, OS version, plugin format and the preset or Structure in use. Repeatable clicks, CPU spikes, state-recall problems, unusual gain changes and Randomise issues are especially useful.
